Our meetings take place monthly on Saturday afternoons at:
St Paul’s Parish Rooms, Reading Road, Wokingham, RG41 1EH from 2.30
We are a very active group and our meetings range from talks from Textile artists, mini workshops, show and tell with a sales table and raffle. Please check out our programme below
We also welcome non-members to the meeting at a small charge of £8.00 per meeting
We also hold Saturday workshops take place between 10.30 am and 4.00 pm at St Paul’s Parish Rooms.
Places for the workshops must be booked and paid for in advance. These are open to members and non members. Workshops will be priced individually.

Flax and Linen - Paul Henry

A brief history of flax and how it gets converted into linen yarn and cloth. Using samples of the plant,
fibre, and finished products, a few personal stories of teaching school children how to spin it, and
some family memories of work in the mills . I also explain why flax and linen deserve much more attention
today in environmentally sensitive ways over other fibres.

Hand and Lock - Freya Stanford

Founded in 1767 by French Huguenot M. Hand, Hand & Lock has grown from a military lace supplier into a world-renowned embroidery house celebrated for its precision and craftsmanship. Joined in the 1950s by Stanley Lock, whose couture collaborations earned the company a Royal Warrant, it now serves a global clientele from fashion designers to royalty. Still rooted in traditional embroidery techniques, Hand & Lock champions British craftsmanship through its work, education initiatives, and legacy of excellence spanning over 250 years.

Workshop -TAKE A PICTURE & CREATE A TEXTILE PIECE
From 10am to 4pm at St Paul’s Parish Rooms, Reading Road, Wokingham RG41 1EH
Please bring lunch, Tea and coffee will be provided
This workshop explores one way of making an embroidered piece based on a landscape photograph.
You will work through project from simplifying the picture, outlining on the fabric, painting the fabric, then adding the sheers and the hand stitches
Finally,thinking about finishing and mounting
All materials provided. No previous experience needed!

Emma Little Millinery is a small business that creates bespoke hats and headpieces that blend traditional and modern millinery with imagination and sass. We are passionate about making the wearer feel and Be Fabulous! We respect the planet, using responsibly sourced or pre-loved fabrics and vintage jewellery to produce beautiful, couture creations. While helping to reduce textile wastage – a huge challenge for the fashion industry – recycling fabrics also gives them a story and connection to the past.

This is my personal talk where I speak to groups about my work, how it has developed over the years and a look at what continues to inspire me.

Unearthed - Stories told through stitch

Textile Artist Vanessa Rolf will introduce her working methods researching archives, using maps and delving into stories about people and landscapes. Her series of works in response to archives of archeological artefacts questions the value of things, what we choose to keep, how we treasure objects, and how these shape our ideas about being human. This body of work is evolving into explorations of the geology of the landscape and how this can be explored through textiles.
Vanessa primary uses hand stitch and inlaid appliqué methods with wool felt. Her practice also often includes reusing fabric that holds traces of its previous story.

Travelling Books
Wokingham Embroiderers has been running a Travelling Books project for several years and many members participate. It is a ’round robin’ with A5 sketch books circulating around contributing members.
Each member begins with their own sketch book, creating a page and a cover for the book. Some members even make a bag for their travelling book. It is then passed onto another person in the group until each member of the group has completed a page.
Then our travelling books continue to circulate until eventually all pages contain work by our textile artists. At this point they are returned to their owners and if they wish the member starts a new travelling book.
